What is interim management?

Interim management is a way of resourcing senior management positions that often makes more sense than taking on a permanent person. Interim managers are used in many situations, for example:
  • Covering sudden departures
  • Maternity cover
  • Stalled permanent recruitment situations
  • Fast-tracking critical projects
  • Managing specific initiatives or change processes
  • Managing post merger integrations
  • Kick-starting start-up situations
  • Managing rapid growth / new market entry
  • Turnarounds / corporate recovery
  • Crisis management

Interims are typically independent managers who have chosen interim management as their way of working, usually after distinguishing themselves in senior management positions. The typical interim assignment can last from several weeks to several months, and can be used for any senior management position - CEO/MD, Heads of Function, Heads of Division or positions reporting to these.

Assignments are not always fulltime – often a role can be covered with 3-4 days per week input.
Interim management is not the same as consultancy - interims are doers, as opposed to advisers - they are hands-on, pragmatic, experienced managers.
